Biomedical Engineering

        Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field of study that fuses disciplines like engineering, mathematics, physics, medicine, and biology. Biomedical engineers work on design, manufacturing, maintenance, and calibration of medical devices. Nowadays interest and responsibilities of biomedical engineers include developing systems to sustain and enhance human life, designing artificial organs, or creating rehabilitation systems for the handicapped.

        Emerging medical technology has increased the demand for biomedical engineers who are capable of defining a medical problem in engineering terms and of finding a solution that satisfies both engineering and medical requirements. These professionals will bridge the gap between clinical medicine and applied medical technology.

        Biomedical Engineering Department at Erciyes University was founded in 2007. In 2008, it started its teaching activities with 25 students. Our department is the first biomedical engineering department among state universities in Turkey. It has 7 faculty members ( 4 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 2 research assistant). The young department strives to recruit world class researchers with Ph.D. degrees in different disciplines.

        Our department accepts 100 undergraduate students who are selected by the National University Entrance Exam (OSYS) annually. The students have to complete two semesters of English preparation classes offered by Foreign Languages Preparation School or need pass an English proficiency exam to be exempt from this preparatory period. Undergraduate students have to complete 2 periods of summer practice. Therefore, students will gain experience in service sector and industry by using theoretical information that are learned in the class.

        M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering were initiated at Erciyes University Institute of Sciences in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Faculty members and graduate students at our department strive contribute science by carrying out high quality research studies on topics, which include, but not limited to biomedical instrumentation, biomedical signal and image procession, and physiological system modeling.  

        We aim at educating our students in parallel with the newest technological advancements and make them successful engineers who can apply their engineering skills in biology and medicine. The healthcare sector, both domestically and internationally, needs well qualified biomedical engineers. Therefore, we anticipate that our graduates will serve to improve quality and cost-effectiveness of health care on a global scale.


Civil Engineering

        Department of Civil Engineering was established in 1991 and gave its first graduates in 1995. Since 1997,  it has run master's program and in 2009 students were accepted to the first doctoral program. Department of Civil Engineering has made a point of bringing the civil engineers up as equipped with the knowledge and skills in scientific level and having technological knowledge and it has also adopted to realize practical and theoretical research projects by running master program in contemporary level and considering the related problems of the region and the country as a principle. In addition, our deparment aims to help to the solution of the related problems of private and public institutions all over the country which apply to us.

        Department of Civil Engineering as a developing department is reforming academic staff, laboratory and basic technical equipment day by day and it has also become professional in technical services within the scope of  research and university-industry cooperation. Our department gives particular importance educating civil engineers who are idealist, self-confident, equipped with knowledge and skills in scientific level and can take responsibility during the undergraduate education.

        As for graduate study, doing theoretical and practical studies related to Civil Engineering is aimed by meeting the successful young engineers’ demand. With their results, publication of the studies in national and international publishing settings as an article or assertion is aimed by contributing to the development of the area and country. Department of Civil Engineering consists of four departments; Construction, Geotechnical, Hydraulic and Transportation. As of 2009, total academic staff consists of 3 professors, 4 associate professor, 6 assistant professor, 2 instructors with PhD, 5 research assistants, one expert and one instructor in partial status. Also a construction technician has been assigned in laboratory. 


 

Computer Engineering

        Computer Engineering Department has started its education under the name of Control and Computer Engineering in 1995 and its name changed as Computer Engineering Department by The Council of Higher Education in 1999. The department offers 5 years of undergraduate education. First year covers English preparation class and remaining 4 years cover basic computer engineering education. There are one professor, one associate professor, seven assistant professors, one lecturer, and five research assistants in the computer engineering department. The department accepted its first students in the fall semester of 1995. Each year 150 new students are enrolling to the department. MA and Ph.D. education are also being offered in the Computer Engineering .

        The department have several laboratories. These are Computer Lab., Test Lab., Computer Networks Lab., Embedded Systems Lab., Operating Systems Lab., Image Processing Lab., and Project Labs. The laboratories are equipped with the new technologies and are being used for several courses including computer programming, operating systems, database management systems, embedded systems, etc.   Computer engineering department also offers several programs and education courses with the collaboration of Erciyes University Continuous Education Center (ERSEM).

        Education plan of the department is organized to follow recent developments in science and technology . In this regard  in addition to the fundamental engineering knowledge,  several courses are also offered to the students to increase their specialization in certain areas. Computer engineering department students demonstrated their skills in various competitions. 


  

Electrical-Electronics Engineering

        Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department commenced education as a Department of State Academy of Architecture and Engineering in 1977 in Kayseri. When Higher Education Council was established in 1982, it became a Department of Faculty of Engineering at Erciyes University. Moreover, evening education program started in the academic year of 1992-1993 and teaching English at preparatory school started for both programs of our department in 1996-1997 academic year. In the academic year of 2004-2005, the title of our department was altered as Electrical & Electronics Engineering by the approval of Higher Educational Council. In our department, there are total 27 full time academic staff at the department such as; 5 Professors, 5 Associate Professors, 5 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer, 10 Research-Assistants. As of 2006-2007 academic year, approximately 2050 students graduated from Electrical & Electronics Engineering Department so far. Furthermore, 130 Higher Engineers (M.Sci.) and 52 Doctorate Engineers (Ph.D) graduated from Graduate Programs, carried out by Electric-Electronic Engineering Department which is a main science branch of Institute of Natural Science. According to the classification announced by Higher Educational Council, our faculty comes at top of the list and this result shows the scientific capacity and success of our academic staff indirectly.


   

Energy Systems Engineering

        Energy Systems Engineering Department at Erciyes University, aims to prepare students for a successful engineering career so that they can identify, formulate, model, analyze and solve Energy Systems Engineering problems by applying their mathematics, science and engineering knowledge to the problems.

        Our department offers a five-year applied undergraduate education plan (first year is for English preparation) in cooperation with national and local education institutions and industrial companies.

        Energy Systems Engineering Department is currently in cooperation with Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Material Science Engineering.

        Energy Systems Engineering graduates can contribute to a wide range of industry branches where energy is used such as business centers, hotels, public institutions, industrial companies, malls, power stations, energy production corporations, construction companies, energy transportation systems, etc.


    

Environmental Engineering

        Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to improve the environment (air, water, and/or land resources), to provide healthful water, air, and land for human habitation and for other organisms, and to remediate polluted sites.

        Erciyes University, the Department of Environmental Engineering was established in 1999 in response to the growing concern over the environment and the need for fully qualified engineers capable of undertaking professional responsibilities for optimum development and prudent management of water, air and land resources. The department offers the degrees in Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) since 2006/2007 education year.

        The department has a-five year education program, one year English preparation and following a 4-year environmental engineering courses. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and properly dispose of wastes, maintain air quality, control water pollution, and remediate sites contaminated due to spills or improper disposal of hazardous substances. They monitor the quality of the air, water, and land. And, they develop new and improved means to protect the environment.

        The main aim of the department is to make engineers who will protect and prevent destruction of environment by providing not only theoretical education but also practical engineering courses. In order to succeed in this, management, education and scientific activities should be well cooperated with industrial organizations and local governments. Additionally, enhancing the Department's national and international standing by conducting significant basic and/or appplied research emphasizing infrastructure systems and environmental technologies is among our goals. 

    

Food Engineering

        Food Engineering Department opened on 18th Augusth 1998 with in the body of Engineering Faculty at Erciyes University was established to educate food engineers that have been needed by our country and district industry and to supply required support to food sector. Our department has been aimed to give an education to accepted students with an international be able to accredited education program. Food engineering department  gives five years period of study and one of them is prepclass. It consists of Food Science and Food Technology.

        Our department has been started to education with first students came with Student Selection Examination in 2004. Food Engineering Department gives education based on basic engineering, research and development and menagement, food production technology, design and planning, process quality control, food microbiology, hygiene and sanitation, food preservation and packaging, ın this context, our department that planned giving service, aimed to train food engineer that can use scientific method in working area, innavator, solve problem and contractor. Near the supply of reliable, productive and hardworking personel to food sector, our department has made a point of giving service to solve the sector’s problem.

     

Geometic Engineering

        Geomatic Engineering is a science which interested in measuring earth’s whole or part in the metric mean and delineating these data in the form of map and plan, also every measurement, calculation, query, and presentation connected to location, evaluating in computer. Geomatic Engineering is a branch of professions that use modern technologies very well.

        The main task of Geomatic Engineering is that compose an infrastructure for development projects. Civil engineering, Architecture, geological engineering, mining engineering, urban planning, environmental engineering and geography are science and professions fields are close contact with our profession. Especially, Geographic Information System prepares a base, production cadastral maps, ground plan, technical infrastructure (water, canals, gas, telephone, electricity, etc.) maps and thematic map to above mentioned professions. Geomatic Engineers can find a job with satisfactory salary in public institutions and large companies. Furthermore, Geomatic Engineers can set up own companies.

        Geomatics Engineering Department has started training-education in Erciyes University at 1995, called Geomatics program. Department is applied to 5 year training-education program with English preparation of the first year. Department began to accept students since 2004. There are 5 Divisions such as Geodesy, Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, Cartography, and Surveying Technique. The department is working to create “Information Systems” division. Implemented training-education plans are designed to monitor the developments in science and technology.

        Geomatics Engineering is an engineering branch of self-renewing with following modern technology, which uses electronic measuring instruments, computers, information technologies and satellite techniques. In our country, Geomatics engineers are currently around 9000 people.

      

Industrial Engineering

        Industrial Engineering is a branch of Engineering Science, which is responsible for the design, operation and improvement of production and service systems in the best way. Industrial Engineers analyze the systems as a whole, define the problems and develop solutions by using engineering principals and analytical tools. While doing this, the aim of Industrial Engineers is to obtain the best solution by using the man, machine, raw material, energy and information resources accurately.

        Industrial Engineering Department was established in 1991 and had the first graduates of BSc. degree in 1995. The department has continued to give education in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research branches. Besides, Industrial Engineering MSc. Program was opened in 2004 under the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. MSc. students and the academicians have contributed to the science with the advanced researches about various subjects of the field. In addition to scientific research and activities, the academic personal of the department has contributed to the university-industry cooperation by offering consultancy service and applying research projects for various production and service sectors. Additionally, BSc. students will be accepted to the second education program during Fall 2009 semester.

        Undergraduate students perform 3 summer practices with the subjects including observation of production systems and application of industrial engineering tools. Thus, the summer practices and the application projects assigned in the courses provide the students opportunity of applying the theoretical knowledge into practice and getting experience.

       

Material Science and Engineering

        For many engineering applications, new designs depend on the development of new materials. Materials are important for all engineering branches because designs are limited by their properties. Generally, Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary engineering branch which is interested in transformation of materials into products that are needed by people by using theoretical and practical information known about the materials. All processes from production to last use of metals, metal alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites which are improved by using the advanced properties of these materials determine the work areas of Materials Science and Engineering.

        The Materials Science Tetrahedron is shown the relations between the structure, processing, performance, and properties. The material science and engineering is concerned with the properties of materials which are mechanical, chemical, thermal, electrical etc. Materials Science and Engineering Department was established in 2005 in Erciyes University as parallel to the development of industry in Kayseri by the aim of developing up-to-date technologies and transferring them to industry. The department is included one division which is the materials science. The department will accept undergraduate and master of science students in 2009-2010 fall semester. 

        

Mechanical Engineering

        Mechanical Engineering is the creative application of science and expertise to design, construction and operation of products and processes. Mechanical Engineers combine imagination with modern technology to offer innovativ solutions to meet the complex requirements of society and industrial.

        There are currently over 1070 students studying at Mechanical Engineering Department. The main areas of study are Power Engineering and Manufacturign-Construction Engineering.

        The Mechanical Engineering Department has a very high reputation. Students enrolled on the Mechanical Engineering schemes will meet the growing demands of a range of industries with the wide range of module options available you can choose to focus your studies on applied mechanics and system dynamics, thermal science and energy technology, materials science and manufacturing technology. The schemes are therefore well suited to those wishing to become either engineering managers or those wishing to become involved in the application of new technologies in a range of industries.

        The wide spectrum of jobs available range from research to designing and deriving the highest economic benefits from the application of new technologies.

        

Mechatronics Engineering

        In the simplest sense, mechatronics is an engineering discipline that deals with systems consisting of a combination of mechanical, electronic and software-based components.

        Mechatronics is a synergic combination of mechanical engineering, electronic, control and computer systems. It is an interdisciplinary area of engineering that deals with the design of advanced systems and products that are based on an integration of mechanics, electronics, computer and software technologies.

        The Department of Mechatronics Engineering at Erciyes University was established in 2005.

        The student who graduates from the program and who has the knowledge base mentioned above will have job opportunities in all high-tech firms which use advanced computer-based production systems, as well as research centers that develop and use advanced automation products. 

         

Textile Engineering

        Textile education and the career, obtained after the end of this education spread over a wide area containing the common ground with the science, technology and art subjects, can be defined as an interdisciplinary structure containing, on one side, textile sciences and textile engineering and on the other side, textile management, textile technology and textile design branches. When these disciplines are investigated in close detail, for example, textile sciences within in itself contain a wide range of  subjects including the polymer sciences, fundamental chemistry  together with the experimental studies and theoretical simulations and modeling approaches.

        Polymer sciences and technologies approach the textile engineering via the fundamental physical and chemical sciences as well as engineering technologies via the processing routes. Whereas the chemical engineering and sciences approach the textile engineering via the applications and the use of the dies and chemicals used in the textile industry. 

        Basic physics, mathematics and statistics form the association and unity from the point of view of textile modeling and calculations. On the other hand computers and computing  softwares form another unity amongst themselves.

        Textile engineering contains the product and process design in itself according to the application areas. From this point of view, textile engineering shares the basic concepts with the other fundamental engineering disciplines.

        Textile technologies contain the processes needed for the production of the products according to the application areas. This environment contains the parameters somewhere between the fundamental engineering and management subjects.

        Textile design contains fundamental art subjects and forms common ground with the textile engineering and technologies. Textile management contains common ground, on one side, with the economic and administrative sciences,, on the other side, with the textile technology and textile engineering on a smaller scale.

        When viewed from another perspective, the textile education can be seen to consist of a very broad range of disciplines or can be seen to follow a very detailed and substantial education in any discipline.

        When the textile education in Turkey is considered, the undergraduate programs can be grouped under two distinct categories. The first category consists of textile sciences, technologies and management programs, whereas the second category consists of primarily textile design and apparel (i.e. ready made clothing) programs with some textile fashion programs associated with the faculties of fine art and fine art education.

        When the textile departments within the engineering faculties are considered under close observation, except one, one general program is offered with fundamental textile and professional lectures on top of highly diluted and generalized engineering lectures, which in the last two years, offered with optional lectures as an additional variety. In the other case, instead of optional lectures, the undergraduate program is structured with many textile and related professional lectures on top of 3 optional and highly diluted engineering lectures.

        In conclusion, due to the interdisciplinary nature, the textile education is spread over a wide area and forms common ground with many different science subjects. This statement is also valid for the textile R&D activities. In practice, there are tens of thousands of small & large, commercially active, regional and national textile companies operating under different branches. These companies earn 1/3 of the national income and employ almost 1/3 of the total workforce in the country.

        When viewed from the point of view of above arguments, those who select textiles to study, will be offered a lifetime career opportunity during the course of the undergraduate textile programs.
